Santa Clarita Celebrates Armed Forces Day

Michael Brown / May 19, 2018

The 7th annual Veterans Appreciation Day, hosted

by Help the Children, brought Santa Clarita veterans together to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

Saturday, the 7th annual Veterans Appreciation Day was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6885, off of Sierra Highway.

Many veterans and families came out for the event in celebration of the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces of the United States.

A truck from Help the Children was at the event, where veterans were given free Home & Garden items on a first come, first served basis, according to officials.

The event also featured a $2 pancake breakfast, as well as a $2 hot dog lunch and a silent auction. Items auctioned included new barbecues and lawn mowers, according to event officials.

There were also several jeeps from World War II on display at the event. A live Big Band from the United Services Organizations, featuring the “Andrew Sisters” played live music for attendees.

Armed Forces Day is a national observance in the United States held on the third Saturday of May each year. On August 31, 1949, Louis Johnson, the Secretary of Defense at the time, announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force days.

The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, according to officials.
