Child Hunger

Hunger Awareness

Some call September Hunger Awareness Month, others make claim to October, while still others go for a spring hunger campaign. Hunger is not a seasonal thing. If we could only keep the hungry in mind throughout the year, maybe the numbers wouldn’t be so devastating. The U.S.D.A. reports that 15.9 million children under the age of 18 live in poverty. The U.S. census finds that over 46 million are impoverished as the median income drops. Statistics are constantly changing, unfortunately not for the better.

With the nation’s current economic crisis, families find themselves unable to meet basic needs. Food insecurity has become the leading consequence of steady income decline. Studies show that the absence of adequate nutrition puts children at higher risk for numerous health problems. Hunger is a global epidemic.

Help the Children brings hunger awareness to the forefront by providing food worldwide. The odds might seem stacked against us, but we never waiver in our attempt to help children. We are thankful to the many volunteers and donors who make minimizing hunger possible. The catch phrase, Hunger Awareness, is more than just talk. It’s a plea for people to be conscious of the hungry day in and day out. Without help, hunger continues unabated.

How can we stop child hunger?

We want to bring awareness to the reality of child hunger. With countless children going to bed hungry every night, it's time for all of us to take a stand and join the fight to help end child hunger. It's a heartbreaking ongoing tragedy that needs to be addressed.

The free lunch programs of public schools are geared for low-income families during the school year and provide an invaluable service. Many utilize the program as a way to make ends meet, while others don’t eat without it. What about the months when school is not in session? There are children going home to an empty pantry and with questions about where the next meal will come from echoing throughout their days.

Our Summer Food Box Program will help alleviate this problem. Help the Children feeds over 75,000 families per month, both here in the United States and abroad. Our Summer Food Box Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children whose September lunch tickets remain out of reach for months.

How often do you think about child hunger?

We are full of food choices, with restaurants on every corner, markets adjacent to one another, and convenience stores galore. Leftovers are continuously thrown away, without a care, while right outside our doors, across the country, and beyond, there are hungry children.

We want to help, by making food available for underprivileged children and their families, but over the last several months food donations have diminished. We ask you to please help in replenishing those supplies.

Our volunteer-based operation, packages and ships food boxes to the impoverished around the world. Donated food is also delivered to local organizations and then picked-up, by families in need. Every step makes a difference, so let's walk together and feed the children!
